artist biography

Inel Date’s work explores a sense of place inspired by different landscapes she interacts with. She creates a visual language to communicate a mark of human activity or just the seasonal play of light and shadow. She is an observational artist using her background as a Cultural Geographer she is inspired by “reading the landscape” and communicating this narrative to the viewer.  Born in South Africa she emigrated to rural Australia in 2002 and in 2004 she participated in her first Australian group exhibition at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery, NSW. She was awarded her Master of Arts Degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal (Pietermaritzburg Campus). Date also won a scholarship to study a Doctorate at Syracuse University (USA) these graduate studies were later put on hold in lieu of love and life. Date has taught Visual Arts in South Africa and in regional NSW. Since 2018, Date has pursued her arts practice full time in her rural studio in Cowra, NSW.  She is a 2019/2020/2022 Calleen Art Prize finalist, Lethbridge Smallscale 20000 2022 finalist, Gosford Art Prize 2022 finalist, Hornsby Art Prize 2022 finalist and a Kangaroo Valley Art 2022  Prize finalist .
